Although Unix windowing interfaces predate the earliest versions of Windows and Macintosh, they have never attracted users in bulk, so that Unix and then Linux systems have been mainly for servers.
Now, Ubuntu, a Linux distribution based on Debian try to change things with its new user interface called Unity, based on Gnome and oriented to allow maximum use of screen space. The original idea was developed for mini laptops where space screen is a highly prized value.
A novel idea of \u200b\u200bthis new interface is the union of the menu that lets you launch applications and windows with the windows open bar, which also tries to be hidden whenever another window uses the space where it is located.
Another innovation is to mount the menu bar of the applications on the title bar at the top of the windows.
